Maidstone United goalkeeper Lucas Covolen was in tears after his team’s memorable 2-1 FA Cup win over Ipswich Town on Saturday.

The National League team was playing in its seventh match of the competition and was expected to lose to the second-placed team in the Championship table.

But Maidstone made history with a 2–1 win at Portman Road, which took them through to the fifth round of the competition.

Lamar Reynolds put the visitors ahead in the 43rd minute with a wonderful chip that went over the head of Christian Walton.

After this the host team started responding through Jeremy Sarmiento’s deflected strike.

But Maidstone booked their place in the next round through a fine finish from Sam Corn, knocking out the away visitors in the process.

One player who stood firm during the contest was goalkeeper Lucas.

The Brazilian made a number of excellent saves to keep Ipswich at bay and ensure his side progressed at their expense.

And Lucas was emotional the whole time, crying as he spoke to the BBC and remembering the biggest and best day of his career so far.

“It means a lot. I just want to thank my whole family, my wife and everyone who supported us,” the 32-year-old said.

“My career in the last few years was not very good and now all the bad parts come into my mind and we produce it. It’s unreal.

“It’s a normal day at the office! I played a great game. I’m so happy I could help my teammates.

“We are on top again and hopefully I can step up to the Championship now.

“What we have achieved is incredible. To be in the last 16 in England is fantastic.”

“We fought to the end, bodies at stake and everything.”

The corner also spoke after his goal saw them reach the last 16 of the tournament.

And the Maidstone Star praised his side for their belief and courage as they kept their dream of glory alive.

“I don’t think I have the words to describe it,” he admitted, also conveying an emotional figure on the pitch.

“We had confidence and it showed on the pitch that we were willing to put our bodies on the line.
